What type of person is suited for an AdWords role?

In the past, I have been approached by some friends who have asked about getting involved with AdWords as a profession. I’ve always promoted AdWords as something that anyone can learn on paper; it can be a different story when it actually comes down to the work however. Tough targets and tricky clients can create a stressful work environment which isn’t ideal for every personality.

I was just curious to find out what sort of qualities and personality traits are required to make a good AdWords specialist?

Actually it should be somebody who wants to learn news and does not wants to be "passive" in learning new AdWords features. Is it easy to setup campaign, but optimization is another thing.

Specialist must find solution, when problem arises - should be analytical, creative, patient. Have a control over everthing (if it is possible).

All above is my opinion and I try to be Smiley Wink

I'd say an AdWords person has to be analytically predisposed, has to like to work with numbers, and to like learning; has to own it, meaning understand the end goal, why they're doing what they're doing. And last but certainly not the least and possibly most importantly has to be willing to accept that they will make mistakes.

This is a great question and something I've been thinking about and struggling a lot with lately.
It seems to be that many AdWords professionals who are "for hire" (who are not working for themselves or running a company) see it as a stop gap job. I've worked with clients and we've experienced it ourselves, that many who have worked in AdWords only roles get burnt out after a few years and then just go through the motion.

It's starting to appear that the most likely person to be suited to an AdWords role is someone who knows hardly anything about it and has a passion for marketing. The learning curve keeps them mentally challenged and when they have the opportunity to see how AdWords impacts other channels, that's where their focus can go.

Someone in an AdWords only role, in my opinion, speaking from experience, can suffer from some incredible burnout unless they are either challenged or rotate through different tasks. Considering the size of the AdWords toolset, this isn't actually that hard. Putting a campaign builder or copywriter onto Google Shopping is a whole new world to learn and can change things up for them significantly.

So I guess, it depends. Someone who has lost the passion is difficult to reignite and someone who's got the most to learn might suffer less from this but is also a bigger risk.

I have given this a lot of thought as well. All the replies to this point have been spot on. I have hired and trained a few people and have learned a thing or two from the process. First, I would rather hire someone WITHOUT Adwords experience that I can train. Who I actually hire depends on their character and if they possess most or all of the following qualities:

  • are that they are curious and inquisitive by nature
  • do they love to learn (a variety of subjects - especially a science or psychology combined with a math)
  • do they find interest in multiple fields / domains / hobbies
  • are they analytical in nature (do they love working with spreadsheets)
  • are they are tidy and organized
  • can they perform under pressure
  • and are they creative

It's a challenge to find someone with ALL of those characteristics but they are out there. At the end of the day, I will take someone with good character, good work ethic and willing to learn any day over someone who thinks they already know it all.

Great input everyone, it's really interesting to see the different takes on it!

Interesting tactic regarding burnout @Dave_Davis, it's something I've faced myself more than once before.

This is a great question. I interviewed over a hundred candidates for my old agency in a 20 month search. And for my new agency, I've interviewed dozens. These are my personal preferences.

Curiosity to Learn.
Ability to Admit Mistakes.
Ability to Admit They Need Help.
Ability to Train Others.
Teamwork Personality.
Ability to Talk to Clients.
Ability to Simplify Complex Ideas.

That's my "minimal list." I find education background largely irrelevant... unless they are a developer as well.... which is a great bonus when we develop scripts and software.

I would say definitely analytical with a great passion for learning. Learning new industries. Someone who gets a rush from testing running trial and errors & new features. Striving to get better results each time

Interesting that all of the answers have been about the Adwords side of the equation, the technical side. Yet there is also the sales side and (potentially) the ability to run a business. In a previous post of mine I raised this question in the form of comparing the two sides of the equation to two personality types. One, the more introverted techie/nerd personality who loves computers and the Internet and being alone in their mom's basement (ok kidding at the end there) and the other being the total extrovert with the magnetic personality that just sells, sells, sells all day long and loves it. I wondered how many people have the ability naturally to be both and how many of use take training to grow in the area we lack. I think that training is a great topic to explore in the community.

True. Finding a sales person who can understand adwords is incredibly difficult. I've been looking for 2 years and I still haven't found one.
