Funny True Stories from HR. -Trying to Hire PPC Marketers

Happy Wednesday Y'all. A qualified PPC specialist is difficult to find.

At my previous agency one of my responsibilities was to handle HR.  From the interviewing to the signed contract.  I successfully hired dozens of social media/content marketers, developers, and secretaries.  Never a PPC marketer that lasted more than 2 months.  Not for a lack of trying though.

in 2.5 years we spent $20,000 on linkedin, $4,500 on dice, and "employed" 6 recruiting agencies.  We also ran an unknown amount of Facebook ads to our website.  Here are some of the people we hired.

The Maven.

Fresh out of high school.  The maven was a he... which was a point of debate between our project management staff.  He was incredibly cocky.  We let him go after the first day when he utterly destroyed the accounts.  Change history is pretty useful.

I'm Going to be Arrested

After an incredible interview, we sent a contract.  The start date was the upcoming Monday.  I received a text the Sunday night before at 10pm notifying me there was a warrant out for our newest hire's arrest.

The Scammer

We met many scammers.  This one was completely unique.  She wowed our boss into paying her $5,000+ every two weeks for a salary of $130,000+ a year.  After 2 months of not logging in (change history is amazing) our boss reluctantly pulled the plug.  The old agency was scammed several times... but never to this amount.

The Californian

We hired a person we believed was from California.  We Skyped him in the day time only to see it was night time for him.  After three months we realized that he was in India... and proxied a California phone number.

The Hiker

When we asked what his interest were, he said hiking.  It turns out he went on hiking trips for weeks and even months.  We would consistently go over budget.

And the above is why I taught myself PPC.  Smiley Happy

The only other company I have worked for with a similar story was a car dealership in TN early in my career. As you can imagine, car salesmen can have "colorful" histories. One was a former country singer, another a convicted felon for gambling, and a hustler. Being the only one who knew how to use a computer and the internet meant that I more or less managed the online portion of the business.

I gotta give The Californian credit, sounds like he had a good game even if he wasn't eligible to work in the US. Also, kudos for teaching yourself these skills and I am glad you are part of this community. I also appreciated your thoughts on the PayDay Loans discussion.

I guess we all experience this early on... Haha. The Californian is probably pretty common for "remote" workers. Especially developers. The only reason we knew was because of how his desk was positioned so you could see the outside. Otherwise, we wouldn't have questioned it.

This is hilarious! The Maven is intriguing on destroying accounts after one day. The Californian cracked me up.
