Does your title match your responsibilities?

Does your title match your responsibilities?

The world of business is always evolving. Companies are forced to restructure more and more frequently because of the changes taking place. In an environment such as this, it is imperative to maintain clearly defined roles.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Changes can come so quickly that you may be shifted to fill a gap temporarily, and simply never settled back into your old position.

While doing all you can for your company is the proper mindset, it is also important to make sure your compensation is in line with your new responsibilities.

Ask yourself a simple question. Does your title match your responsibilities? Are you doing the job you were hired for? Is your workload increasing? Decreasing? The answers you come up with might surprise you and it just might motivate you to ask about it during your next performance meeting.

Are you working with multiple titles but only being paid for one? Thoughts?

Interesting topic, @Spencer_Wade.

For me, my workload is increasing, my roles are expanding... and so are all the great things that go with 'em.

Does my title match what it was five years go? No... I just keep changing my title as my skills expand. This is where many people get offtrack... thinking they should remain in a little box with a bow on top. Bust out... break through... and harness what you are today and where you are going tomorrow. Expand and grasp for new challenges and goals often.

Happy Monday... and be Google great,

James

I can honestly say I have rarely had a job title that properly reflected my areas of responsibility, currently Social Media Analyst, formerly Content Management Specialist at the same company. The title given to me by HR doesn't match the title used in RFP responses, and I am called in to consult on SEO, SEM, web development, Schema or related areas.

I believe one overlaying issue is companies that refuse to adhere to job title naming conventions. It could be they don't want to pay the rates associated with the title, but then it doesn't accurately reflect their role within the company. SHRM dances around the issue and I do not expect this to change for many companies any time soon.

I too have held many titles, actually being a CEO, you pretty much hold them all, great points @miguel m

Maybe employers could have different pay scales based on descriptions, the more you take on the more you make....

Thanks for taking the time.

I have never cared much about Titles, as they never accurately describe or bring the correct cogitations to define the individuals abilities, personalities or effectiveness.

Having held many "titles" in my life, the only Title I want to be know by is " Eric Gehler", as my name is my reputation, and those that have interacted with, lurked, or known me throughout my life will each have a "true meaning" of how those interactions have effected them personally, professionally, or universally.

At the end of the day, We are who we are, and we are judged by the perceptions of others. It is our jobs to make sure those perceptions are positive, the interactions have been helpful, and we are considered trustworthy, helpful, intelligent, and caring.

As my tombstone should say, "He was quick with a Joke, a Lit up your smoke, But there is someplace he would rather be"

My favorite title for @Eric Gehler is "a brilliant friend I highly respect." Robot Happy

Great answer, Eric, as always. And it's great to hear from you.

Lately, my work titles have been all over the place. My clients seem to be throwing everything and the kitchen sink at me. Fortunately, I enjoy this and find it keeps me sharp and from settling in too much.

Kind Regards,

James
