Hi Hopeuplives,

'Negative' keywords are any terms or phrases that you add in your account (at campaign or ad group level) for which Google will not serve your ads. These negative keywords are added to refine traffic, improve relevancy, etc. The negative keywords have 3 match types:

  • Negative Broad

Syntax: -keyword

These keywords block any query which contains the negative term within them.

  • Negative Phrase

Syntax: -"keyword"

These keywords block any query which contains the negative term (as shown in qoutes) within them.

  • Negative Exact or Embeded Match Type

Syntax: -[keyword]

These keywords block any query which contains the negative term (exactly as in the square braces) within them.

For example: if you have a shop which sells and delivers flowers, you may have 2 camapigns; 'Sell Flowers' and 'Deliver Flowers'. Here, in the campiagn 'Sell Flower' you can add 'deliver' as a negative kewyord. The syntax for the same will be: -deliver. Also, lets say with in the campaign 'Sell Flowers' you have ad groups like 'Sell Roses', 'Sell Tulips', 'Sell Lily', etc. then in the ad group 'Sell Roses' you can add 'tulip', 'lily' as negative keywods. The syntax for the same will be: -tulip, -lily

Also, a lot of times even when our ads are rightly targeted, our ads might be displayed for irrelevant quesries. Say for example, for ad goup 'Sell Roses' you add are shown for a query 'kiss from a rose seal lyrics', then you can add 'kiss from a rose', 'lyrics' as negative phrases. The syntax for the same will be -'kiss from a rose', -'lyrics'. You can also add the query as a negative as -[kiss from a rose seal lyrics].

Hope this helps you.
