Hi Chris,

Welcome to community!

It depends on the goal defined for the campaign.

Above approaches their pros and cons:

Many key words: Using many keywords, rather I would say broad phrase keywords will increase the reach for the ads. And you can get the conversions.
But as these are broad ones, you will have irrelevant clicks as well resulting in high cost per conversion (CPA).
So you may have high CTR and low conversion rate

Few optimized key words:
This is quite a good approach to optimise the ad. Optimising keywords may include matching keywords properly, phrase, exact, broad match modifier.
This will help you to display as only to the relevant users which will result in good CTR and high conversion rate.
But if you overoptimise the keywords, ie if you use long tail keywords using embedded match, then you will have limited reach but with controlled CPA.

So its better to check which keywords are working best for the campaign. To do so, you can check the keywords search terms report from
Campaigns > Keywords > Keyword details button >  Select "All"
You'll see search terms which triggered ad and which keywords are matched from your keywords list.

You can remove the keywords which seem irrelevant and add the keywords which are not in keywords list but are performing.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

"you can check the keywords search terms report from
Campaigns > Keywords > Keyword details button >  Select "All"

You'll see search terms which triggered ad and which keywords are matched from your keywords list.  "

That is not working for me, it is only showing

 Search termMatch typeAdded/ExcludedCampaignAd groupClicksImpr.CTRAvg. CPCCostAvg.

Was that a piece of wrong information ?

Hi Adrian,

You wont find this information for same day.

Can you try selecting a considerable date range and see the same report, may be a week.

I selected a month , there are hundreds of search terms that would have appeared. The only search term report that I know is in google analytics not adwords.

If you're still having a problem seeing the search terms & the keyword that triggered it, try this step again

Campaigns > Keywords > Keyword details button >  Select "All"

And after that, do:

Columns > Customize Columns --> Attributes --> and ad the Keyword column
