Why did AdWords axe position preference as a tool?

I know from looking at old info on the web that Google used to have this feature where you could optimize to increase the chances for a certain ad position in the auction?  Why did Google axe this feature?  I know for certain ads that CTRs may be higher in certain ad slots (not necessarily in top slot (1-3) or even in the top slots.  Did Google feel that this was affecting the auction process negatively?

Just curious.

Well, we don't know. But we had our fair share of discussions on the old forum: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/AdWords/thread?tid=4064b918cd22d65e&hl=en.
