Why Gmail ads results in low sessions despite getting good clicks?

Hi guys,


We've been using gmail ads for a while :

First campaign was an ad with a image inside ,and then another with a  video ad with link to website alongside .In both cases respectively :


652 clicks - 20 GA sessions

509 - 103 GA sessions


That's such a discrepancy. We tried tweaking the content ,and in all cases used something which has worked in the other mediums.


Is this common with Gmail ads ? Do you think this is because most people can't open the ad or is there something else missing ?

Hi Akhil,


The clicks you see reported on Gmail ads are clicks to expand your ad within the user's inbox, not clicks through to your website (you can read more about that here). Hence the clicks will typically be higher than your sessions since not everyone who expands your ad will click through to your site.You can add the column for "clicks to website" (a Gmail-specific column) to view the clicks through to your website in AdWords. This metric should align more closely with the Analytics sessions you see.
