Auto Targets is a tab, which houses ad targets for Google Shopping Campaigns, Regular Product Listing Ads as well as Dynamic Search Ads. This will help in advanced bidding based on the different attributes from product and dynamic ad targets. Adwords uses data from Auto Targets to show relevant ads to the users.

In case of Google Shopping Campaigns, Auto Targets help you to create additional product targets from your linked Google Merchant Account Product Data Feed. Read more here

In case of Dynamic Search Ad Campaigns, Auto Targets Tab helps you in adding dynamic ad targets like All Webpages, Categories, URL and more. Read more

Thanks!

regular-product-listing-ad campaigns use product-targets;
shopping (product-listing-ad) campaigns use product-groups.

auto-targets were used for regular-product-listing-ad campaigns --
for all items, not already in a target, could be included to set a bid;
shopping-campaigns do not use product-targets or the auto-target.

the new shopping-campaigns use product-groups;
the everything-else product-group serves the same
similar purpose -- all remaining items, not already

in a group, can be included to set a bid.
