Is keyword planner really this far off?

We used keyword planner and selected 96 keywords with a daily forecast of 9.63k impressions and 51.6 clicks. Our results have not come anywhere close to those numbers with only 3855 impressions over 3 days and only 46 clicks. We are using auto-bidding and set our daily target higher than the tool reccomended.

 

Why is there such a huge gap and what can we do about it?

Hi there;

Indeed, the keyword planner is a  statistical tool with a margin of error (which Google does not disclose) that could sometimes be quite broad.

I would recommend to use the historical data (v's the "estimate') provided by the tool. The historical data represents real figures compared with the estimate, which more  a statistical prediction,.

Hi Print F,

keywords planner's estimation is hypothetical. Optimize your ads and include keywords related to your business. Sometimes target Geo location restrict your campaign. Open for the entire state/country if your business is serving there.

The proposed forecast by planner reflects the data for a particular bid and budget you choose at that time. Even you will see deflection in the impressions and clicks data when you will vary the bid and budget.
So, everything which make difference is your campaign bid strategy and other factors (including bid adjustment, ad rank, keywords match types and a lot more)

Hypothetical is a bit "extreme" word. There is a statistical basis to the numbers shown, the "spread " is broad, though.
