tennis shoes - I understand this
+tennis +shoes - I understand this

but what happens if I put this

+tennis shoes - ?

+tennis shoes triggers searches which have tennis in their search terms.

This would ensure that keyword with prefix + (i.e. tennis or a close variation) would be included in the search query everytime someone enters it on Google search. Shoes won't necessarily be included but tennis would be mandatory.

what effect does the word shoes have ? if as you say "Shoes won't necessarily be included"

Shoes is just a placeholder as you do in Keyword Insertion.

All the searched with this keyword will include tennis in their search term.

Here the search queries would contain tennis and shoes might be or might not be included depending upon the relevancy factor. And there would be no order or preference of the search query. This is the major difference between a broad modifier and a phrase match term. It acts like a a broad match but with more controlled features.

 

Keeping it simple the term you use a broad modifier, the part of the term where you include a plus sign, will be included everytime there is a search query entered on Google.
