Do low traffic keywords affect quality score?

My Adwords dashboard shows a list of "Good Quality But Low Traffic Keywords."  These keywords have a high click-thru rate (one of them over 16%) and the adgroups, ads and landing pages are tightly consistant.

The higher traffic keywords are too expensive, but I'm wondering if having just (or mostly) low traffic keywords in my account will affect the Quality Score of my keywords, ad groups, campaigns or account? (I realize Google calculates QS at all levels.)

Hi bom, interesting question, but you've missed one key element - what are the current Quality Scores you're seeing for these low traffic keywords?  If they're good (and I'd call anything 7 or above acceptable) then I can't see how they'll harm your account.  As you say, 16% as a CTR is a decent figure (I wouldn't call it high Smiley Wink ) and as long as they're getting reasonable impressions and clicks I'd say they'd be fine.

As with anything else though, the real question is whether they're efficient for you in terms of conversions.  CTR, Quality Score and all the rest are for nowt if they don't lead to conversions.  You say the higher traffic terms are too expensive - is this measured against ROI or simply a "baseline" cost?

Keyword QS calculation is independent of search volumes. Each keyword's QS is calculated on its own merits, that is, mainly your position-adjusted CTR compared to others using the keyword, whether there's one search a week for it or one per minute. Account level QS is something else.

Hal Varian, chief economist at Google, explains how quality scores are calculated.

(see 4:14 for a quick snapshot)

the three components he lists are(in decreasing order or importance):

CTR, Relevancy, and landing page

i've never come across a suggestion that search volumes might impact quality score.
