Best way to mass delete ads across campaigns?

We just took over a huge campaign with over 6,000 ad groups. Each one has 10 ads and they had them auto-rotating for conversions. I'm going to keep that approach for ad groups that don't get much traffic, but I want to A/B test two ads per ad group and pause the rest.

What's the most efficient way to pause all the ads but two from each ad group? (I want to keep the two with the lowest CPA within each ad group.)

Thank you so much, guys!

Hi Zeke,

Hope you are familiar with Adwords Editor.

You can do your task using Advanced Search features in Adwords Editor.

First Download performance statistics of your account to Adwords Editor.

Then use Advance Search to filter the Ads you want to Delete.

Then Delete.

Hope this helps,

Deepak

One more thing to add to Deepak's great answer, after you Delete the Ads in AdWords Editor, then you want to Post Changes - this will push whatever changes you made directly to AdWords.

I agree w/ Deepak, I'd do this through AdWords Editor, but if can't/don't want to download AdWords Editor, you can also do this through the UI.
1. Log into AdWords
2. Click on the Ads tab
3. Filter your Ads - you can do via words/phrases in your Ads, or based on metrics of the Ads. But filter it to get the Ads that you want to delete
4. Click on the check box in the header row to grab all the filtered Ads (if your Ads span more than one page, make sure to select "Select all rows..."
5. Click on the Edit button
6. Click delete

Hi Deepak, thank you so much for your answer.

Yes, I'm very familiar with the AdWords Editor, but I think the solution you're proposing won't work. There's no filter that allows you to see ad groups with over 2 ads.

Hi Zeke,
Using the AdWords Editor you can export all of your Ads to a spreadsheet, and then use an advanced formatting/find/filter/sort in excel to mark the first occurrence of an Ad Group. You can leave those Ads active, but pause all the other Ads, and then upload the newly paused Ads back into AdWords Editor.

Import file AdWords Editor - https://support.google.com/adwords/editor/answer/56368

Hi Zeke,

Hope Brian's (vkore91) suggestion solves it for you!

Thank you so much, guys!

I couldn't figure out how to do this: "then use an advanced formatting/find/filter/sort in excel to mark the first occurrence of an Ad Group". However, since ad rotation settings are set at a campaign level, I decided to create separate campaigns for ad groups that have a lot of clicks so I can optimize them manually, and keep the other campaigns on "optimize for conversions".

I wish ad rotation settings could be also set at an ad group level.

Thank you again, guys! Have a great day!

Zeke
