404 Errors - impact on ad performance

Due to deleting a bunch of old items Webmaster Tools shows a lot of 404 errors to our site.

Our Google shopping feed doesn't contain any page references with 404 errors.

Does Google take into account all of the 404 errors when selecting ads to display?  In other words, can a competitor get better bid placement just on the basis of the 404 errors - even though they are irrelevant to the search terms.  For any reason does Google think less of your site because of the errors.

Interesting to understand if there is any correlation to the two totally separate issues.

Thanks!

Hi Keith T,

AdWords is not affected by organic search results. As long as none of your ads point to pages that return 404 errors, it's not a problem. They will eventually fall out of the index and Webmaster Tools will no longer show them.

Best of Luck,

Pete
