Scammers "from Google Partners"?

Visitor ✭ ✭ ✭

Yesterday I received a voice mail from "Tj. From Google. I am calling from the Google partners team, and this is with regard to your status as a Google partner."

I tried to call Tj back using the number provided and reached the voice mail screener for Erin Hattersley, not Tj, so I hung up. I looked up and confirmed that Erin is a Program Manager at Google for Nonprofits. I suspect that this is a scam using Erin's name. Can anyone confirm my suspicions?

I have also been contacted repeatedly by someone claiming to be from Google saying "Final attempt to support your agency" and offering to help me with an Adwords campaign that they say "hasn't had activity for the past 30 days."  This campaign actually ended three years ago.

Am I just being paranoid or are the scammers getting better at impersonating Google employees?  Or are these Google employees or interns?

Hey Vinge,

You have the right idea for being skeptical, I would call into support and have them check the system to see if there is anyone trying to reach you. It doesn't sound like Google's way of reaching out, usually a notice inside the account would indicate any issues. Also your partner area would indicate status issues.

Contractors do call from time too time, so not saying it couldn't be a contractor, just sounds scammy. You have the right idea, when in doubt call in to double check.

Hope that helps...

The phone call claiming to be someone from Google has called us as well and it's a scam.

It could be a scam, so you have smart senses.

Spencer provided the best course of action by suggesting you call Google Support to verify. Scammers do call... but remember that so does Google. We love getting calls from the real Google, as does most of us Google Partners.

Have a great weekend and be Google great!

When I would get these, I would either scam them back or just say, I can't talk - send me an email. Any legit Googler will be able to pull your email address (without you giving it to them, while they may verify it, don't volunteer it) and send you an email if they really want to talk to you.

Thanks for the suggestion to call. I'm now sure that Tj from "Google partners team" is a scam. I'm used to getting these calls but this is the first time they've mentioned Google Partners.

The second person I mentioned was not a scammer. Even when he contacted me from a Google email account, I didn't believe him as he didn't appear to know much about my situation. Turns out he actually works for Revana who subcontracts for Google to help agencies with their accounts . I've been doing Adwords for 15 years so I let him know that I didn't need help at this time. I'm sure he is very capable but according to his LinkedIn profile he only has four months experience.

Thank you everybody for the support.

Nice due-diligence, these can seem a little out of place at times, always better to be safe than sorry.

Good Catch and Good Luck with the biz....
