I heard Seth Godin talk about word of mousewhere he concludes that what people decide to tell others about your services is critical to modern marketing.

Online reviews are referrals.  They often create more of an impression on leads than your sales content.

Brian says something important:  multiple, legitimate reviews.  You need them to be authentic, and you need at least a handful to provide the social proof that influences people.

Positive reviews on Google or other review sites are not just the icing on the cake - they are the cake.  A local business needs their reviews to be working in their favor, or trust issues may undermine other marketing efforts.
