"GTIN Required" warning - but product does NOT have a unique GTIN - what do I do?

We have received warnings on several products, that they must have a GTIN by May 16th.  HOWEVER, I just went and looked at the box of 2 different products from the manufacturer in question (Bburago toy cars) and the 2 different products have the SAME EAN code on them -- in other words, each SKU does NOT have a unique GTIN.

In such a case, how can we be required to upload a GTIN?  It will only confuse customers.  We are currently using MPN, which is obviously better for these products.

Is there any way to appeal the GTIN requirement?

the updated global-trade requirement is that if a valid
gtin exists and has been assigned by the manufacturer
then, a valid and correct gtin must be submitted --

a proper manufacturer's brand value must also be submitted;

mpn was not, and is not, a required value -- only recommended.

otherwise, simply submit an identifier_exists FALSE and
do not submit any brand, gtin, or mpn data for the item.

variants may be submitted, if and only if, all variants in the

group are submitted with an identical item_group_id and

at least one variant attribute (color, size, pattern, material)

with a valid unique value for all items within the variant-group.

if variants are submitted properly then,

identical global-trade-data are allowed --

depending on the product's manufacturer.

valid global-trade-data must be assigned

only by manufacturers, never merchants.

otherwise, the items must be removed from the listings,
or risks a disapproval or suspension from the program,
at any time.

Thank you for this - We currently have brand, mpn data and brand information for our all of our products - however we do not have GTIN numbers for about half of our items (300 items are made by hand by small companies that do not have UPC codes). We are now in process of adding GTIN numbers for those products that do have GTIN numbers and will add FALSE to identifier_exists. Should we remove the other manufacturer values brand, mpn to items with no GTIN or leave these values populated?

first, you're welcome.

simply, most all handmade items should be submitted
with identifier_exists FALSE and no mpn and no brand

and no gtin, in any form, whatsoever.

however, forum-members cannot look into any submitted data or accounts.

google only wants valid global-traded-data as assigned by the manufacturer,
if, and only if, valid global-trade-data exists for the exact item being sold and
shipped -- regardless of the age or condition of an item-offer.

google does not require any global-trade-data,
if none currently exist and has never existed,
for the item-offer being sold.

google does not want any merchant-assigned global-trade-data.

there are three basic use-cases for a submitted item-offer:

(1) a valid gtin exists and was assigned by the actual manufacturer:
- valid gtin is required to be submitted;
- valid brand is required to be submitted;
- valid mpn is optional if valid mpn was also assigned by the manufacturer,
otherwise, mpn is not submitted at all, in any form whatsoever.

valid gtin is stamped at the factory, by the manufacturer,
directly on the product or package, being sold at retail --

(2) only a valid mpn exists and was assigned by the actual manufacturer:
- valid mpn is required to be submitted;
- valid brand is required to be submitted;
- gtin is not submitted, at all, in any form whatsoever.

(3) valid mpn and valid gtin do not exist and never existed --
for example, a handmade product or customized item-offer:
- identifier_exists is submitted with an exact value of FALSE
- do not submit any gtin, mpn, or brand values, at all, in any form whatsoever.

note that google's data processing can sometimes be inexact or inaccurate --
if the proper rules and policies have been followed there may still be a
warning or disapproval for an item; either ignore the warnings or contact
google directly for guidance, before making any changes.
