My client is setting up an online store selling used accessories, and we are trying to figure out how to determine the unique product identifiers for clothes and handbags in particular which are often at least a decade old, and never have the original tags or packaging.

We need some advice to figure out how to proceed.

the age or condition of an item does not matter -- with
respect to global-trade-data (unique-product-identifiers).

the type of physical item determines
what global-trade-data is required --

for example, handbags and watches require any two
valid global-trade-data values (mpn, brand, gtin);
most all other apparel accessories, such as jewelry,
require only a valid brand.

if valid global-trade-data existed, at the time the item was
created then, that valid global-trade-data must be submitted.

for example, if an old, used, polo shirt is being submitted
then, polo must be submitted as the brand -- only a valid
brand is required for a shirt.

if valid data existed then, valid data must be submitted --
regardless of how difficult obtaining the data might be;
otherwise, such items simply cannot be submitted.

however, if the required, valid, global-trade-data never existed
then, simply submit identifier_exists with an exact value of FALSE
and do not submit any global-trade-data for that item -- do not
submit any gtin, do not submit any brand, do not submit any mpn,
for such items.

the age or condition of an item mainly affects the condition attribute --
condition must be submitted with a value of used for all such items.

Are there resources available to determine the global trade data for items which no longer have any identifying numbers or barcodes?

unfortunately, any such resource, especially on-line,
would be problematic since verifying an exact match
of the item to any resource would be mainly visual
and the matching global-trade-data is typically the
most reliable product identifier.

generally, global-trade-data on the product itself is still
the method used to legally identify an individual item.

for example, the brand's tag on a shirt that could be verified by a
manufacturer would typically be the most reliable identifier and
all that would need to be submitted, in the case of a shirt.

if there are no tags or legal identifiers whatsoever directly on the item,
depending in the type of item, a local antique dealer, consignment shop,
jeweler, or pawnbroker, might be resources; some may have experience
in at least identifying such items visually or matching the item to similar
items and a corresponding manufacturer's resource -- or verifying that
global-trade-data never existed so that the item can be safely submitted
with identifier_exists FALSE and without any global-trade-data.

identifying the item's brand is usually a good first-step --
since that may result in a maker or manufacturer resource;
for some items such as jewelry only a valid brand is required.

otherwise, such items simply cannot be submitted as product-listing-ads;

however,  there are many other ad-formats and campaign-types that are
available, do not have such stringent rules and policies, and may be a
better fit for advertising such items --
