Taxonomy Translation

Google publishes Taxonomy files in different languages.

http://www.google.com/basepages/producttype/taxonomy.en-US.txt

http://www.google.com/basepages/producttype/taxonomy.fr-FR.txt

Each file is sorted alphabetically in the native language. Does Google publish information that would allow mapping from one Taxonomy to another? For example, line 2002 US English maps to line 46 French:

en_US 2002: Food, Beverages & Tobacco > Food Items > Bakery > Bagels

fr_FR 46: Alimentation, boissons et tabac > Aliments > Boulangerie > Bagels

Thanks,

Mike

google has been asked about adding keys to
google_product_category values many times --
only updated dates have been added so far.

as an aside, alternatively, google_product_category
values may all be submitted in all u.s. english --

regardless of the registered feed's target-country.

of course, then, any policy discrepancy detection among
countries must be via hand-inspection of all items to avoid

a disapproval or an account suspension from the program --
the u.s. taxonomy values will not offer any such hints.

Hi Mike

As the policy and feed specifications for different countries vary, the availability of some taxonomy values may not always be present in every language, therefore would not have a mapped value.

Also, due to the altering of alphabetical values when language is changed, matching line to line would rarely work.

Can I ask why you are wishing this?

Thanks for your reply Tom.

If I wanted to offer the same product but to the UK market in English language and the French market in French language, it would be really useful to be able to map the product categories from en_GB to fr_FR in order to be able to display the appropriate translation. I know there are differences between the taxonomy files, but in the case of en_GB and fr_FR, there is only one difference out of 6171. I actually tracked it down to be "Radar Detectors", presumably because these are illegal in France. Ignoring this one extra line in the GB file, there ought to be a one-to-one mapping otherwise.

I was just hoping there might be a ready made way to get this mapping but I suspect there isn't and it looks like it's going to be a manual process every time. Google must store all these taxonomy values in a database so it's just a pity (for me) that they don't publish the primary key with each one. Ah well.
