Targeting item_group_id with Item ID product group

Hi, I'm wondering if I can target products in my feed using item_group_id.

Case scenario:

My feed looks like

Product 1: Group ID = SKU123, Item ID = SKU123_OPT1

Product 2: Group ID = SKU123, Item ID = SKU123_OPT2

Product 3: Group ID = SKU123, Item ID = SKU123

Product 4: Group ID =SKU456, Item ID = SKU456

Product 4: Group ID =SKU789, Item ID = SKU789

If I create a product group where Item ID = SKU123, will it only target product 3, or will it also target product 1 and 2? Are there any adverse effects to this approach?

You can only target them using

Category, Brand, Product ID, Product_type, custom_label_0,custom_label_1,custom_label_2,custom_label_3,custom_label_4 and condition.

I'm not sure of any other targets.

When creating groups, it is best to start of with product type, category or custom labels, and than filter down by product id / item id

Is there a max number of Product IDs you can partition by?

Product ID is unique, so 100,000 products can be listed I think.

Custom labels can have 1000 unique values
Category are set by the category limit so which ever Google has provided
Product group no known limits so this is pretty good
Brand no known limits.

Kind regards, Emmanuel.

Mariel, if you go into the AdWords UI and view your product groups, when you add a new product group you can see how many products qualify for that new group. So you can see if 1 or 3 products show up in that product group. (I think)
