Promotion Text will be disestablished! Any actions required?

Visitor ✭ ✭ ✭

The promotion text will disestablished, but we saw that we do not get any traffic for shopping campaigns without promotion text!

We had this issue for several customer and accounts.

Removing the promotion text will immediately stop the traffic. By adding it again, traffic will be back.

Any actions required? Do we need a promotion feed for every customer??

Thanks for any hints or clarification

first, you're welcome.

the statement that no actions are required are in the context of:
(a) google (automatically) no longer using the promotional data in an ad-group;
(b) google (automatically) generating promotional messages for all merchants
based on merchant-center-account settings and the submitted products-data.

one example -- if the shipping-settings or the shipping-attribute submitted
indicate zero as an accurate shipping-price then, google may automatically
generate a promotional-message of free shipping.

first, that is why the recommendation to verify that all submitted data
and all settings within the merchant-center are valid and accurate --
google may automatically generate messages from any of this data.

price and sale_price are the other critical attributes for automated messages.

second, google also indicates that if merchants would like going beyond
the newly automated messages then, either the promotions-program or
a third-party may be used to highlight offers beyond what is automated.

the ad-group promotional messages are being retired
and automated messages will now be possible for all
merchants based on settings and (feed data) attributes --
there is nothing that needs to be done for this to happen.

two specific alternatives to the ad-group promotional-messages are:
(1) do nothing (except perhaps verify all data and settings) -- many
promotional messages will be automatically generated by google;
(2) if merchants would like additional promotional-messages -- beyond
what will be automated then, either the merchant-promotions-program
or a third-party alternative may be used.

promotions can make a positive difference in quality, impressions, and clicks;
google will begin to automatically generate promotional-messages such as
sales and shipping related messages, for all merchants -- nothing is required
for this to happen.

if merchants would like additional promotional messages,
beyond what will be automated then, action is required.

promotional information is simply not allowed.

promotional information is simply not allowed in any submitted
products-feed inventory data, including in text or on images --
or is otherwise a policy violation and grounds for the data or
listings to be removed, disapproval, or (permanent) suspension
from the program, at any time.

all such information should be immediately
removed from all submitted product-data.

all content and images submitted for products-listing-ads is limited and
restricted to product information related to on-hand inventory items that
are kept currently, physically, in stock, by the merchant; all information
must describe or depict an exact, specific, physical item, characteristics
of that physical item, or how that physical item might be used.

promotional information may be submitted, with limitations, using
a promotions-feed -- as part of the merchant-promotions-program.

the merchant-promotions-program is per merchant
and is granted purely at google's discretion.

the potential action is for the merchant to simply
request entry into the merchant-promotions-program --

via the merchant-promotions-interest form.

if google grants entry into the program, the current merchant-center-account
will be changed automatically by google to allow a separate promotions-feed
or promotional information to be submitted separately -- from product-data.

then, each promotion submitted is reviewed by google
for adherence to the program guidelines -- a promotion
may be disapproved, or a merchant suspended from the
program, at any time.

If you want to submit promotions you need to use the dedicated Promotions Data Feed, you can not submit promotional text using the normal data feed.

Thanks for replying.

Sorry...but I have meant the ad format : promotional Text
https://support.google.com/ds/answer/4601305?hl=en

Google announced to retire it...could just find a blog post right now
http://www.feedmanager.co.uk/feeds-management-news/google-retires-promotional-text-shopping-campaign...

So, our issue is that we get no traffic if we remove the ad type "promotion text" from an adgroup in adwords.

Question again:
- any actions required if google will retire this kind of ad type??

Thanks for hints

(1) the official retirement was announced back in august here --
http://adwords.blogspot.com/2015/08/new-automated-extension-for-shopping-ads.html

(2) promotional messages (still) cannot be included within a products-feed.

(3) possible actions and alternatives were indicated in the announcement --
(a) verify all attributes and account-settings, such as shipping, are accurate;
(b) sign-up for the merchant-promotions program or a third-party alternative.

Thanks for answering. I know, I can add merchant promotions.

However the official announcement indicated that no actions are required.

If I remove an ad and the result is no traffic, and adding it back the traffic will show up again without changing anything else in the account and you can clearly see it in the dimension tab (hourly basis) that during the hous without ad we got not a single impression, I think this is somehow related.

But I will accept the answer, hoping not losing all traffic in the next couple of days, when google is retiring the ad for shopping. At the moment it is still there.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation.

So for solving our problem we just serve promotion texts in adwords on ad level as long it is possible. Then google can automate the promotions whenever they want to do it. Today google is still showing the old ads from my adwords accounts (2015/10/2).

I'm jumping in as I'm seeing similar behavior and I'm not really satisfied with Celebird's answer.

The problem: If there is no ad-group promotional-message then my campaign gets no traffic. Adding back the promotional-message then my campaigns gets traffic.

This has NOTHING to do with promotional text within the product feed.

Since Google is retiring promotional-messages, the assumption is we don't need to set promotional-messages any more. However, that is not the case since traffic is gone when not set.

So the questions is - is it really being retired or not? And if it is, then don't require me to set the promotional-message for my campaign to get traffic.

Does this make sense?

I find it interesting that the ad group promotion field is still there when creating new campaigns. Which ads to the confusion.

When Google says it is doing it automatically, you need to be aware that not because the value was added in Adwords means that Google will now do it automatically.

However the big issue is that Google does not accurately share details for the sole purpose of one merchant gaining an unfair advantage compared to the other.

So all you can do now is simply add the promotion text if it still available in Adwords, and ensure you have the automated promotions enabled which are

Sale price
Free Shipping
And maybe some other attributes.

Alternatively as this is all speculation simply contact a Google Adwords representative. Community members merely share there opinion and are not always correct and are not employees of Google. @Celebird has great answers, sometimes a bit long Smiley Happy but pretty complete answers based on information available from Google.

So to answer Cedric's answer, if you see the ad group promotion field, enter it. And hope Google Shopping shows it.

Alternatively you are reliant to the promotions data feed or automated feature.
