Product Ratings / Seller Ratings / Customer Reviews Survey

I have a few questions about Google ratings / reviews:

1. Product Ratings - Google now allows product ratings and reviews to be submitted directly from a website via data feed - is that right? Didn't they require third party aggregators for this? When did this change? Is there any good reason to use a third party since they now allow direct feed?

2. Seller Ratings - Am I correct that seller ratings appear automatically from review sources like Yelp, Angie's List, etc.? Is there anything I need to do to feed seller ratings?

3. Customer Reviews Survey - Google is offering an email survey to collect reviews. Am I correct this would replace other review collection software on my website? Or what is the purpose / benefit? Is the Google Reviews Survey necessary for Product or Seller Ratings?

It seems to me that getting stars in search is now a very simple matter of sending a feed to Google - is that right or am I missing something? Thanks!

(1) yes; yes; around 2015; to save time, effort, possibly improve trust-signals;

(2) yes, automatic; only approved seller-ratings services/sites are included --
the two sites mentioned are currently not on google's approved published list;

most approved seller-ratings sites require some form of sign-up or cost --
the best likely course is to check with each individual ratings-site to
determine if they are approved by google, are submitting data to google,
or if google is collecting data directly from their site, and the details
concerning any sign-up or any costs associated with that specific service.

(3) google-customer-reviews is a subset of approved seller-ratings services;
google-customer-reviews are free and tightly aligned with google's products;
google-customer-reviews can work in conjunction with third-party review-systems;
the choice to include one or both systems is rather up to each merchant.

seller-ratings-extensions and product-ratings are entirely separate features;
seller-ratings cannot be submitted directly by individual merchants/sellers.

neither seller-ratings nor product-ratings are
guaranteed to show with a (shopping) ad.

note that getting stars in organic-search results is entirely separate from
getting seller-ratings-stars or product-ratings-stars in paid (shopping) ads --
although, there is sometimes some overlap between the two.

for google-organic-search-results stars and related ratings questions,
the best likely course is to ask either within the webmaster-central
help forums, or -- for a walk-in store with in-person office-hours --
