Product Feed Uncompressed vs GZipped

We recently noticed that product feeds can be submitted in compressed formats such as gzip, as mentioned here in the feed documentation.  This seemed like a good idea to save a bit of bandwidth.  However, in testing today, 24,067 items were processed from the uncompressed feed while only 20,883 were processed from the gzipped feed.  When decompressed, these files both have 24,068 lines of tab delimited text (1 for the headers), and a diff shows them to be identical.  Why the discrepancy in items processed?

this is usually an issue related to encoding
or special characters within the file or both.

for best results, be certain the file contains plain (ascii)
text without any special characters or byte-order-marks.

otherwise, forum members cannot look into feeds or accounts --
we would need a lot more specific information to offer specific
suggestions; or, a support specialist may be contacted directly.
