Microdata - Meta tags or JSON-LD

I previously used meta tags for my microdata as per googles instructions but I have switched over to JSON-LD so that I could make use of rich snippets on google.

My issue is that I am now seeing a growing number of "Missing microdata for condition" and "Missing schema.org microdata price and availability information" in the GMC.

My JSON-LD is correct and passes all test so I know that all the data is there for GMC to find but I am still seeing these issues.

Is this because JSON-LD is now supported for use by the GMC or is this a case of Google looking for my existing microdata, not finding it, throwing an error, and not having re-indexed the new JSON-LD yet?

JSON is not supported by Google Shopping crawler bot. You will need to revert back to meta tags. Unfortunately Google's different bots all don't have the same capabilities.

I recommend going back to meta tags as all crawlers support it.

Hope it helps

If I go back to meta tags then I have issues with rich snippets, it was suggested by Google to switch all code the JSON to improve my rich snippet data as that was favoured over using meta tags.

Does this mean that I need to use both meta tags and JSON, this seems a very backwards step for Google to be requiring the same data in 2 different formats on the same page.

If you want Automated updates via Google Merchant, than you need to use metatags as JSON is not supported.

So yesterday when I created this post I had 151 microdata errors, today I have 70 microdata errors.

I have made no changes to any code or products.

This would indicate that JSON must be supported or the problem would simply be getting worse, not reducing in number.

If I look at the actual data in the GMC that Google shows as seeing on my page for "Information created by automatic item updates" i see the following:-

Price on your site - £8.99 - Last checked on: 08-Feb-2017 06:48 GMT
Availability on your site - In stock - Last checked on: 08-Feb-2017 06:48 GMT

This is coming from a product that is on the list of items that are under "Automatic item updates: Missing schema.org microdata availability information"

This appears to be saying that I am missing some data, but also saying that the Bot at Google can see the JSON data.

I am currently in the process of testing JSON+LD against GMC and I am finding inconclusive results as the GMC portal is inconclusive at times concerning markup languages. I wish Google would announce what they support/do not support within Google Merchant Center.

what google currently officially supports for shopping-ads is indicated here:
https://support.google.com/merchants/topic/6386199

the last official word from a google-employee is that the merchant-center
officially supports only what is currently indicated within the help-articles --
and specifically not json-ld.

the rules, policies, and what is supported for google-organic-search and
the google-merchant-center for shopping-ads are separate -- except where
otherwise indicated within the merchant-center help-articles or on google's
official blog posts.

google certainly experiments occasionally and there may be empirically found
outliers or discrepancies with respect to google's underlying software --
but currently, there have been no changes to the documented support
for json-ld or any related client-side page updates.

generally, use only server-side updates for anything related to shopping-ads.

for best results, use only what google officially supports according
to the official merchant-center-support help-articles or what google
announces within their official blog posts, that mention shopping-ads
or the merchant-center:
https://support.google.com/merchants/
https://adwords.googleblog.com/

any issues or discrepancies between what is observed and what is officially,
currently, documented in the merchant-center support help-articles may be

reported directly to google as a product defect/complaint and suggestions

for future feature-support may be submitted using google's feedback-form.

The official google support pages are out of date. Googles own support tech openly acknowledged the fact and stated that they needed updating to match what google currently offer.

It is not possible to rely on the information that Google has published on the specifications at present.

This is why so many people are having these type of issues and seeing unexpected results and errors.

generally, until the official documentation is changed or there

has been an announcement in the official blog, a feature is

not considered officially, fully, supported and should not be

implemented within a website for shopping-ads -- as noted

by the various merchant-center errors and inconsistencies

reported with respect to json-ld and automatic-item-updates.

if there is some internal discussion with a support-specialist,

that should likely be resolved directly with the person who

was assigned to the specific case -- which may include an

internal request to update the official documentation.
