Is it possible to implement A/B testing with Merchant Center ads?  I know adwords can do this with text ads but is this possible for merchant center product ads?  Thanks.

campaign-experiments (a/b testing) is not a supported feature
for merchant-center shopping-campaigns (product-listing) ads.

importantly, with respect to product-listing-ads, the same physical inventory
product cannot be submitted or listed twice -- that is a policy violation and
grounds for disapproval or a (permanent) suspension, at any time.

there are likely several approximate alternatives.

for example, filter a small subset of (one or more) products within
a separate shopping-campaign using a different priority-setting --
then, temporarily change the priority so that the experimental
campaign takes precedence and runs for a time; then, change
the priority back, and compare the results.

note that the salient feature of campaign-experiments, a/b testing --
the automated random decision to choose the control or experiment
for the auction -- does not exist for shopping-campaign priorities.

similar alternatives likely involve scripting.

another potential alternative is to create an image-ad using the
products-feed-data as a guide, within a separate campaign-type --
that does support campaign-experiments.

note that shopping-campaign and non-shopping-campaign
ads for the same product are allowed to run simultaneously.

Hi, I want to know if A/B testing of Google Shopping campaigns is possible. Is it still true that:

"campaign-experiments (a/b testing) is not a supported feature
for merchant-center shopping-campaigns (product-listing) ads."

(from the September 2015 answer)

Or is this now offered?

Thanks.

yes, this is a rather old thread.

a/b testing, drafts, or experiments for shopping-campaigns
are still not supported and are unlikely to be supported in
any same similar manner since the fundamental notion is to
rotate created ads/landing-pages -- shopping-ads require a
landing-page to be fixed, identical for all users, and google
automatically creates the shopping-ad, on-the-fly, from the
submitted data; also, having the same physical inventory

item listed more than once is a policy violation.

rather, a/b testing may be simulated by simply using a time-bound
set of attributes or landing-page changes, that may also be further
isolated within a shopping-campaign using custom-label attributes.

for example, simply create a landing-page that conforms to all shopping-ad
rules and policies for a physical inventory item -- submit the item in the
primary-feed and measure the performance over a set, specific, time-period;
then, change the landing-page slightly, or submitted data, slightly, using a
supplemental-feed -- such as a title or description -- for the same, exact,
inventory item, for the same set time-period, then compare the results.

since a supplemental-feed may be scheduled,
such testing may be somewhat automated.
