Hello,

I'm a novice when it comes to Google shopping and the merchant center, so I hope this makes sense. We had a vendor request that we add specific text to our product feed to indicate all product we purchase from them is last years product. Is it possible to include additional messaging without having to update the product description on our site. I was hoping we could replace the shipping or special offer messaging included in each listing from the feed

Thanks!

Hi @CBWY5

Does your question wish to address having said information be in the product feed itself or that it shows with the shopping ad? Because if its the former you can incorporate it into the product's description attribute, while the latter would require adding it to the title of the ad (it would not qualify as a "special offer").

Let me know if that helps!

Nick

Hi @CBWY5

You can use feed rules to add the same text to either the Title or Description fields. From memory you will need to add that text to your feed as a Custom Label first.

on a somewhat practical note, depending on the context, google
may choose to display only the first 25, 50, or 64 characters
or so of the title and only the first 140 characters or so of
the description, to users, during the display of a shopping-ad,
unless a user specifically searches for the text submitted --
regardless of how the data is submitted or configured.

normally, such information would be added to the website, first, and
then submitted in the title or description value; as was indicated, a
feed-rule may be used to add the data automatically during a re-submit.

currently, only the shipping price may be displayed -- no other shipping details.

as was indicated, such information could not
be used with special-offers/merchant-promotions.

as an aside, if the items are refurnished, a
refurbished condition value is also required.

Thanks for all the great information everyone! This is all really helpful. In terms of adding a feed rule is it possible to only apply this rule to certain items in the feed? Currently our feed is about 27k items and the additional messaging would only apply to about 2k of the total.

Thanks!

You can set rules based on statements, like if contains, if equals etc...

Login to Google Merchant, click on your data feed, than choose feed rules and start checking it out.

hope it helps

Hi Emmanuel,

Can you elaborate more on the feed rules for us? We're looking at the rules and wondering how this can be used to add text to product titles without completely altering the title. For example we carry a brand of jacket that has a popular model of jacket that changes slightly every year. To improve customer experience in SERP we want to add the year of the jacket model in the title text so that customers know our jackets are not this years model. We list this info in the product description on the landing page, but would like to add it to the title shown on the SERP without altering the product title on site. Could feed rules do this for us? Thanks!

You would need to add the year as a Custom Label in your feed, and then add it to the beginning or end of your title using rules.

RobSkelton, pretty much just explained it. What you create is what you add. So if you add 2015 to the title, than that's what gets added. I recommend reading the below article to get a full understanding.

Hi @CBWY5,

Like the other users have responded, that kind of text can be included into the title or the description. However, the title is much shorter, and you should save those character spaces for things like product attributes and product nouns that will increase your product's relevancy and help with clicks. Putting this text into the end of your description is best, so that customers can see all that your product has to offer without the generic text getting in the way. If you don't want to change your website and just want to change the content of the feed itself, you can use feed rules.

I hope that helps!

Brian
