Do I need a EAN or UPC for my products?

Hi there, we have a small clothing and accessories brand and we are trying to set up our google shopping account with our products. As we are a small business and have about 10 items, we do not have EAN or UPC for our products. Do we have to have them as a small brand? Any help and advice is much appreciated.
Thank you! Sarah - www.bellandbones.com.au

no -- not at all.

simply submit the identifier_exists attribute
with an exact value of FALSE for all such items.

global-trade-data (gtin, brand, mpn) values are only
required if valid global-trade-data currently exists --
merchants cannot self-assign any global-trade-data.

the required global-trade-data (mpn, gtin, brand)
is determined by the type of physical item --
https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/1344057

for example, apparel clothing requires only a valid brand;
apparel clothing does not require mpn;
apparel clothing does not require gtin.

if the required, valid, global-trade-data does currently exist
then, all merchants submitting the same item must submit
identical global-trade-data, as assigned by the manufacturer --
valid global-trade-data is typically stamped on the product
itself at the factory; valid gtin exists as the digits just below
the gs1 bar-code on the product or package:
http://www.gs1.org/barcodes/ean-upc

if the required global-trade-data never existed
then, simply submit the identifier_exists attribute
with a value of FALSE and then do not submit
any brand, do not submit any mpn, do not submit

any gtin data, for the item.

the store's brand will be submitted automatically
by google for all submitted items -- the merchant's
brand is normally not submitted by the merchant.

google never requires any global-trade-data if the
required, valid, global-trade-data never existed --
there is no such requirement.

as an aside, product-listing-ads require a rather high-degree of transparency --
for example, contact information on the website typically must include
a business phone-number that will ring and be answered, valid email,
and a physical (street) address that will resolve on google-maps.

Hi
I'm a complete newbie here, and was reading with interest your answer, I to have some products which are handmade woollen scarfs/throws and baby blankets, these do not have EAN (or equivalents). I notice our reply to Jarrad, but wonder were exactly do you input that data.

simply submit the identifier_exists attribute
with an exact value of FALSE for all such items.

Thank JO

The data needs to be added to the data feed, be it a plugin, xml, csv, management system etc..
However please create a new thread for your questions as no two issues are the same.

Hope it helps.
