Cannot delete over 4K items from Google Merchant Center

Visitor ✭ ✭ ✭

I have over 4k unwanted products in Google Merchant Center that I need removed, and I cannot figure out how to do so. They appear to have been added by the API system. I have no feeds in the merchant center, and the API list (at some point) must have drawn from my Shopify online store using the Shopify google shopping app.

I want to remove ALL products showing in my Google Merchant Center. I have spent hours trying to figure out where the products are coming from and how to delete them. Please do not suggest I remove them individually from the Google Merchant Center as this is not practical.

I wiped all products from my corresponding Shopify web store (the only source of my products connected to google shopping), it has had 0 products for days. Yet, each item in Google Shopping has an ID like this: shopify_US_9295998083_33119572099.

None of the items are published in google shopping, I am showing errors for 4500+ items that I want removed and that do not exist anyplace to edit anyway. In the error list, the "input system" is showing as "content API". These must have been uploaded by Shopify or 3rd party software, I have never used the API for any reason.

I typically wipe and re-import my products to my Shopify web store every couple of days. I noticed that google shopping was showing over 6k items, even though I only have about 1800 products in my Shopify  web store at any given time. So I cleared out my Shopify products several days ago, and some of the products disappeared from google shopping. But I have been stuck with 4500+ items in the google merchant center that I need removed in order to continue doing business. Been in chat and on the phone with Shopify for hours and they are clueless.

Please (urgent!) help me delete all products from Google Merchant Center so I can get to work. Again, there is no feed connected to the Merchant Center, and as far as I can tell no other connection exists between google shopping and my products. Why are they not disappearing, and why can't I bulk delete them? Your help is most appreciated.

first, you're welcome.

generally, any items added via an app must be deleted via that app --
the app must send the exact same same id for the delete that was used
in the insert, via the same (shopify) app -- once the items are wiped-out
within the e-commerce (shopify) website, all the original id's are lost and
there is likely no way to issue the proper delete via the (shopify) app.

the practice of wiping-out should likely stop -- and
is likely the root-cause of why this is happening only
in this particular case, but not to others.

there is no bulk-delete within the merchant-center because, normally,
the way to bulk-delete an entire set of items is to either (a) re-submit
the original registered feed-file with only a header/xml-declaration, or
(b) issue a (bulk) delete with the original id values, using the same
e-commerce (e.g. shopify) app as was used for the inserts -- while
items are still within the catalog and before the items are wiped-out.

currently, that normal method is no longer possible --
likely due to the original wiping and re-importing --
and consequently the re-assigning and the loss of

all original id values, within shopify.

since all the original items and their id values are now gone within
the e-commerce (shopify) site/catalog the likely only options are --

(a) contact someone who is familiar with google's content-api so that all the
existing id values can be read and deleted directly via google's content-api --
this is an extra, normally-not-needed, programming job.

posting the request within the shopify (app) community-forum may help -- since
understanding google's content-api is a prerequisite for (shopify) app programming.

unfortunately, asking for, or offering, such outside-help, within
this forum, is not allowed and violates the community-guidelines.

or (b) remove all the items by-hand using the merchant-center-account.

or (c) wait until all the items expire naturally and do not submit any items
until all the existing items have fully expired -- which is normally a 30-day
count-down starting from when the items were last-updated (inserted);

the expires-in days-left can be seen under the technical-details, of the

per-item-details, by clicking on the item's title, in the products-list-tab.

that said, forum-members cannot look into any accounts.

however, google may be contacted directly for guidance or possibly
extra help with the deletes; be certain to indicate that the issue now
relates to shopping-ads and more specifically to the merchant-center:
https://support.google.com/merchants/contactflow

as an aside, consider pausing any and all related shopping-ads

in the linked ad-account until this issue has been fully resolved

and shopify-support is clear as to the normal way to handle the

adding or deleting of items, within shopify, so that all items stay

in perfect sync with the merchant-center and without having to

wipe-out and re-insert all products, for the future.

normally, if the items were added (inserted) via the api,
then the items should be deleted using the api and its

associated (shopify) app.

as to the merchant-center --

google tracks items by id; once an id is assigned to a physical item
then that id must never, ever, change for that physical item -- if the
same physical item is assigned new id values, google will take them
as new physical items and will accumulate all those "new" items.

the practice of wiping and re-importing products to the shopify-web-store,
is likely causing this -- and likely should *stop* immediately as a practice,

to prevent this invalid accumulation of "new" items from reoccurring, time

and time again; this is also a policy violation and grounds for disapproval

or a permanent suspension from the program, at any time.

as to deletes, the likely only choices are, delete the existing items using either
the shopify-app, or content-api by someone who understands the content-api
and can program a solution, or all items will need to stop being submitted,

altogether, until all existing items expire, naturally, by default after 30-days.

unfortunately, the only other solution, as was indicated, is to
delete the items by-hand via the merchant-center-account.

as to shopify --

each shopify-app will have a specific process for issuing the deletes --
usually this relates to how collections are being handled in that app.

otherwise, the best likely course would be to re-contact shopify-support
and ask for a person who is familiar with the specific shopify-app that
is being used, or contact whoever is supporting the specfic shopify-app
and post in the shopify-community-forum to contact someone who can
program or suggest a temporary solution using shopify or a shopify-app --

Thank you very, very much for your time and your thoughtful reply.

Just to clarify, on the Shopify products side or in the Google Shopping App in Shopify, there is no products showing at all. So it is not possible in any way to remove the products from the Shopify side or using the Shopify Google shopping app. No products are populated whatsoever, so there is no way to delete any products.

I am blown away that I am the only person that seems to be having this trouble, and that there is not a more simple solution. Deleting the items individually through the Google Merchant Center is unbelievably slow and time consuming. If they have a delete option and this circumstance exists, I cannot see why there would not be a bulk delete option. I want these items completely out of Google Shopping right away so my account does not become suspended and so I can submit new products. Like immediately.

I have no real understanding for how the API works, but I have searched everywhere for a simple fix to input a bulk delete sort of command without success. Again, very surprised that I would be the only one that has encountered this. I will post again on the Shopify boards, if you had a reference for a place I could post where I might find someone who knows a quick fix for this using the API it would be very helpful. I have already received word from Shopify support that if deleting the Shopify Google Merchant Center app and reinstalling does not cause the products on the Google merchant center side to disappear that they are not able to do much else. I want to get new products listed in Google Shopping ASAP so I need these 4k+ errant listings removed. Thank you very much.

Hi,

Not sure if you are going to see this reply or not.

Which method did you go for? I'm also having issues deleting products from Shopify in the merchant center, I have 7000+ products and I need to remove half of them

It is recommended to always create a new thread, as each person has a different issue and solution even if its about the same subject.

In your Shopify case, you need to unpublish the products from Google merchant in your Shopify admin account.

Hope it helps.
