Hi,

Every Month I have tried to use google add words for my business.

I pay per click.

I have two accounts.

Last year, in total 14 months on one add words account I was billed $3900.

This is a lot of money for us for no return.

On the other account I was charged $4190 for three years.

For these two accounts I got on average 1 call per month from a genuine customer.

Out of these calls maybe 2 jobs  per 6 months.

Most of the calls I was getting were from google add words affiliated partners trying to sell me SEO and web services to go away from add words and trying to offer me web services.

This ate up most of my add words funds and did not allow me to get customers.

Every three months a new  google account manager would call me constantly, trying to get me in front of a computer to "help" me get more out of my add words.

Twice I did this which enhanced my add with a phone number but neither saved me money or got me any work.

It made the "Google affiliated partner calls"  calls increaseworse, up to three or four a day at least.

Every time I would complain it was costing me too much & that affiliated google business were using my add words to contact me.

We are a small business.

Quite often, add words would leave me with no money in my trading account, with no warning of a impending transaction coming and broke.

I would suspend or pause my account and try to call add words for help.

Nothing would happen.

Account managers are paid incentives to get you to spend more money.

As recently as a few days ago I asked for help and a refund.

You guessed it silence.

When I try to find help and an email address to start my complaint and ask for a refund it is seriously like looking for gold at the end of the rainbow.

It is virtually impossible to find a contact email for add words.

I guess they don't want any complaints in writing so they can deny ever getting asked for help with a problem.

So, virtually none of my money spent has helped my business.

Virtually none of the add clicks have been genuine customers but other business trying to make money from me selling me stuff.

I would not have spent any of this money if I knew that was going to happen but of course google don't explain that.

I really feel cheated.

How can I get my money back

70% I think would be a fair ask.

I also think competitors have been clicking on my adds.

I would like to see my click ip address's from google.

Freedom of info allow this? I asked the account manager for it but silence again.

I am genuinely upset and feel ripped off like its been a con.

Hi Brendan,

Sorry to hear of your unhappiness with your paid advertising campaigns over the past years. While I cannot take that away, I can expand on some of your points to try and assist you (versus ignoring your post). Please remember as you read my reply that I am not Google, I am not an employee, I speak my own words, and am not paid one penny or incentive to spend my valuable time having this digital conversation with you.

Google AdWords support is available to all advertisers right within the account itself. Open Google AdWords, click on the ? in the upper right hand corner and there are various options presented. Clicking on Worldwide Phone Support will also provide a toll-free phone number, live chat and email options to use. Google is not trying to silence you or anyone else. We live in a digital world and that is clearly accepted and understood by Google (just by the nature of their business model).

Google AdWords is a free platform that is solely maintained and operated by each advertiser. There is no promise of performance of any kind and the results vary for each user. The end results are not the responsibility of Google AdWords (or AdWords or Google or Alphabet, Inc). And in this same thought process, no advertising platform offers a promise of the end results or whether customers will come from the efforts. Advertising either works or it does not and when it does not the business typically stops using it.

Google AdWords is very vocal about them not being able to provide IP Addresses and so no one can obtain that info from Google. It's a legal issue and one that is taken very seriously with Google AdWords. All website owners can obtain IP Addresses of their visitors by logging into your hosting account and going to CPanel (or whatever you use) and looking at the server reports. You can then compare these to your Google AdWords data and then compare both of those metrics to your Google Analytics data.

In the end, I would encourage you to cancel each account and stop using Google AdWords as you are... since you are so unhappy with it. I would not continue to venture down a road that made me so unhappy and provided so little of what I want in return.

Personally, I see a great value in Google AdWords and so I use it. I have used it since 2002 and have learned to appreciate it, too. This is not to say that I have not encountered others that feel as you do, so I do relate to and understand your frustrations and see them as real - and that is truly unfortunate.

All the Best,

James

To add to James's great reply, Advertising is a very big and complex system with allot of moving parts.

When advertising you need to makes sure you target the right keywords, hour of the day, audiences, etc... For example if I would just create an ad without really building up a strategy, than the chances of success are very low and high with wasting budget.

Unfortunately Google Adwords has a big learning curve, but once you understand how to set things up, the successes are extremely high. There is a big difference in knowing how to do things in Adwords and setting up a successful account.

With every business, you need to do research how to target them, before implementing ads.

It is indeed sad to see you wasted so much business, I would have suggested hiring a Google Partner or if you are going to do it yourself use Google Academy to study up on the system + other tutorials.

When you get allot of clicks and no sales than the following can be the issue

The visitor was expecting something else when landing on the page (caused by wrong targeting or wrong ad text)

The mechanics to contact you are not very clear or easy to use

There is an issue with the contact mechanics (test everything, twice)

Your targeting the wrong type of visitors, too generic.

As what James mentioned forum members are not part of Google, we are merchants, advertisers, agencies, freelancers etc... helping others alike.

Hope it helps.

Hi James,
Thanks for your reply.
If add words is so specialised than it should not be available for anyone to use like a bazooka is not.
I had very targeted adds. Set to smaller regional areas were I do business.
These web seo writing companies are skilled at searching for small business like me using google add words.
This is a problem for me not being able to stop them and google not affording me protection from that or competitors.

I understand your point of view, the best likely course before you continue advertising is reading up on the official documentation. Than access if your able to setup an effective campaign or not.

1 or 2 conversion per half year does not look like a viable advertising result. And most likely has to do with ether a very competitive market or that it was incorrectly setup.

People that see your ads will of course be able to interact with them, if you feel that you are getting spammed with invalid clicks, than use a 3rd party tool that can help block certain IP. Unfortunately this is an official forum and we can not link to 3rd party tools. So do a search on adwords click fraud. And you will find enough info.

However again, Google Adwords is available to all business, individuals, novice or expert. In the end it is up to the account owners responsibility what goes on in the account. If something is not setup correctly than there is little anyone can do. The best option is for you to stop, start educating yourself in advertising or hire a Google Partner.

Again, I understand your situation, but sometimes you have to think that certain tasks in life are not meant to be completed by some people. And that letting others do it for you, might be a better option.

Pleas also note that you are posting in a Google Merchant forum, and it seems that your advertising has nothing to do with this.

I have also looked at your website, and it lacks allot of basics, such as clickable phone number, privacy policy, terms of use, etc... I recommend you first improve your website, than move on to advertising.

Today, people are very critical when it comes to website quality.

Hope it helps.

Hi Brendan,

You are welcome.

I can see your logic and understand your frustration... but disagree on AdWords being locked down like a bazooka. If that were the case, I would have never been able to use it, which I started back in 2002. I actually used it completely wrong for years but received enough results to make it profitable and then took the study to dig in deep and become certified. This lead to me building a keen intelligence for it and reaching a level of skill above average and helping thousands of advertisers around the world build their companies and communities.

In the event you have not found these resources, this one discusses invalid clicks and this one has a series of links that are rather important for any advertiser to utilize (Best Practices is Golden).

I appreciate your input, as well as the information provided by Emmanuel, and do hope you find success.

Kind Regards,

James
