Additional Images as Main Image

Can the images submitted as 'additional image links' ever be utilized by Google as the one image in the shopping ad on the SERP? I assume Google tests all images that you submit that comply with the requirements of the 'image link' however I can't find documentation on this. I'm wondering if we need to change the 'image link' to do image testing or if Google optimizes automatically.

Thanks

As of now, no.

Only the image link attribute will be used as the main image and the additional image links as the carousel.

If you want to find out what works best, you will need to test it by changing the image link yourself.

Hope it helps.
