Need to Remove Other Query Parameters when Testing

Has anyone else run into issues when targeting based on query parameters? We created a new variable "abtest" to help when performing internal QA. However in order for the test to appear, I must remove any existing query parameters from the URL and replace it with only the test related url. It doesn't matter where in the url the parameter is placed; if there is more than one then the variant will not show. I am using the function equals compared to regex or something else in case that makes a difference.

Example:

www.test.com/shop?camp=1232&abtest=true (doesn't work)

www.test.com/shop?abtest=true&camp=1232&referrer=social (doesn't work)

www.test.com/shop?abtest=true (works)
