Using custom events created in GTM, as experiment goals in Optimize[ Edited ]

we have created custom click events in GTM. We are running an experiment in Optimize, we are not able to use these events created in GTM, as experiment goals in Optimize. This might be a limitation of the Optimize free version we are using, which says that only predefined metrics (pageview, bounces, session duration) can be applied as experiment objectives. But apart from these predefined metrcis, we are able to use goals created in Google Analytics as experiment goals in Optimize.
So is it really a product limitation that we can't use custom events from GTM in Optimize also?
Does anyone have same experiences?
The reason why I am asking this is, we want to measure conversion with total click events of a user, when we are using goals, we are getting unique clicks per user only, because goals are counted unique in a session.
