Previewing experiments

Preview mode allows you to validate that a variant looks as intended before you start an experiment. You can also use it to preview a running or ended experiment.

How it works
With preview mode you can preview variants across different platforms and devices. Since preview mode is a state, you can navigate around your website and preview different pages while in the preview state. Preview mode allows you to see your experiment exactly as your user would see it. You can remove targeting criteria at any time, as needed.

To generate a preview

  1. Click Preview options (on the experiment detail page).
  2. Click Web Preview to open a preview in a new tab, or
  3. Click Share Preview to generate an unique URL that can be shared with colleagues.

Read more about Preview mode in the Optimize help center.

Hi Mike,

preview mode is activated from the Experiment setup page. Icon for previewing is available for each variant you have set up. Screen Shot 2017-01-20 at 10.41.43.png

Have in mind that some user permission levels (read) do not have the ability to preview. Read more on this here

Hi Jason,

We are using the Free version of Optimize and I can not find the preview mode anywhere.  Can you help?

Thanks

Can I get some clarification on how preview mode should work? I find that if I'm logged into Optimize in a browser and then generate a shareable preview link, that link will work on that browser. However if I share the link with other people, or look at it in another browser on my machine, the experiment doesn't load. Is this expected behaviour? The benefit of a preview link is being able to send it to stakeholders to check before putting live, but if they need to be logged into optimize for the preview link to work this seems to defeat the purpose

Many thanks

Isnt there a place to go that explains exactly what the experiment is doing and how it benefits the web site?  All I want to do is add a page that allows my customers to purchase what I am selling.  I am the average, technologically challenged middle age person who just wants something SIMPLE!!!

Hello Will,

There are three things that can cause the experiment not to load:

1. Ensure that the recipient isn't excluded in your targeting rules. All targeting rules must evaluate as true in order for an experiment preview to execute.

2. Remove Audience and AdWords targeting rules before sharing preview links. Audience and AdWords targeting rules don't evaluate as true in Preview mode.
3. Clear your browser cache. The recipient browser could be caching the Optimize container script. Learn more about clearing your cache here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050, or follow your browser's instructions here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bypass_your_cache

Thank you for raising this question. We are in the process of updating our help center article.

Hi Jason, thanks for the response. I've checked with our audience team and neither of the first two scenarios apply for our setup. I also don't think it is an issue with browser cache / cookies as we've tried it in incognito mode in both Chrome and Firefox with cache cleared, as well as other browsers (Safari, IE/Edge), and can't get the preview to work on any of them. Would be interested to know if there's anything else that could be causing it

Hi Will,

Would you mind sharing your Optimize container ID here and we can take a look?

Thanks!

That would be great, thanks loads. Is there a way I can DM it to you rather than post it publically?
