Can you fire a Google Tag Manager tag only on certain optimize variants?

I'd like to fire a GTM tag on specific Google Optimize Variant.

E.g. I have a popup and I want to A/B test impact of the popup vs no popup. The best way to do that, is to have two variants: A = do not fire the popup javascript tag. Variant B = fire the popup javascript tag.

Is there anyway to easily do this?

I also found this answer, which suggests placing the javascript tag directly in the header of variant B. But I was thinking that there might be a more direct way to do it in Google Tag Manager (e.g. specify some Google Optimize variant  ID as being the trigger in GTM).

Any thoughts here?
