http:// vs https:// in Property Settings

Hi,

I hope this is the right location for this.

We just received access to a new clients' analytics account. We are running a PPC campaign for them; they have a separate SEO company that set up their analytics

I noticed in their property settings, the default URL is http://www.xyz.com, but the URL for the site is actually https://xyz.com. (If you type http://www.xyz.com into your browser, it redirects to https://xyz.com.)

I am using this analytics account to set up event tracking goals as well as monitor performance (bounce rate, time on site etc). I'm thinking this discrepancy can cause tracking issues with AdWords data as all my final urls are https. We are also have issues getting event tracking to work, which we usually don't have with other clients.

My question is, does the property setting need to change to https://xyz.com in order for my campaign/goals to be tracked properly?

Thank you for your help!

Hi Andrea,

Default URL doesn't affect data gathering. Both https://xyz.com or http://xyz.com should be removed immediately.

The Default URL field is used to help correct a problem with a website where we can load the same exact page with two different URLs. If you don't see “index.html” or “default.aspx” or something similar at the end of the URL, you should just leave this field blank. Here you can read more about that: http://www.lunametrics.com/blog/2015/09/04/google-analytics-default-page/

Here's the guide that will hopefully help you figure out the problem: https://www.optimizesmart.com/why-adwords-and-google-analytics-data-dont-match-how-to-fix-it/

Let us know how it goes.
