tracking events

I have a client that wants me to add event tracking to nearly every link on their site. It's a pretty extensive site and could mean 100's of events. Is there an easy way to keep track of implementation of this. Something like google tag manager would be ideal for this.

thanks

What sort of links are you referring to? Internal links to other pages on the site.. or external links.. or.. links for downloading .. email links...
or. something else?

pretty much any link on the site
Links that go to other pages on the site
links that exit the site
Links that download documents
Links that open menus
Links that open accordions
Drop down menu selections
Links that play videos

Just saw your comment re using Google Tag Manager.
I would use a spreadsheet for planning it all out before setting anything up
For help with GTM, I suggest using the GTM help forum

These free resources from Lunametrics will get you off to a fast start with setting up events for

Hi Dennis D,

I would question the need to track every link under the sun. What does this accomplish for the client? Are they basing any business decisions based on the number of clicks to links alone? Do they have other key performance indicators or tactical metrics that your time would be better suited to helping implement? To me this just sounds like overkill (my opinion only!).

But Bronwyn has a good idea of using a spreadsheet to manage everything.
