Widget Tracking

Hi All,

I have a question about how traffic is tracked in GA, let me tell you my issue.

A site I work on has a JavaScript widget on a forum site, this widget clicks through to the site I work on. For some reason we aren't getting traffic through as referal from the forum site, I think its coming through as Direct traffic but I am not 100% sure.

We had another widget that was within an iFrame that pulled traffic through as referal traffic.

I don't understand why teh JavaScript widget isn't showing traffic as referal, anyone got any ideas?

Thankyou

The url in the widget that links to your work website
edit the url so instead of simply linking to say http://yourworksite.com
it has utm parameters added to it http://yourworksite.com/?utm_source=forumdomainnamehere.com&utm_medium=referral

also just to check, the forum domain is not on the GA Referral Exclusion List for some reason?

Is the forum website where the widget resides a https site with the site you work on being a http site?

Thanks. https to http will show as direct traffic unless the https site specifically sets it up to
pass referral info.
Having said that. if its forum site, im assuming their login etc is done over https, so is someone likely to be
on the https version of the page when they click on the widget?

Have you cleared your cookies and cache and gone thru the process from clicking on the widget on the forum to your website to
check what is happening/what the behaviour of it is.

There may also be some kind of redirect or something going on between A and B that is removing referral information etc

Thank you for this.

I did do a test in Real Time but as the site has a lot of activity its hard to be 100% accurate with where the traffic is coming from.

I will do another test ad have a look.
Thank you

Hi,

I have tested the site and it does seem like its coming through as Direct Traffic.

Now this is a problem as we need to track users coming from teh forum we have a widget on as we need to pay money from orders that come from the forum site.

How can we track traffic from the http:// forum site to our https:// site???
The forum site has no https:// even on the login page.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

http to https should not be a problem.
It's https to http that does not pass referral info.

Have you tried appending utm_source and utm_medium parameters to links back to the destination site?
