Hello Expert,

I want to define URL structure for my eCommerce site. Following is my query : -

My Current URL Structure is given below
Homepage - abcd.com
Catergory Page- abcd.com/mobiles.aspx
Sub category Page - abcd.com/samsung.aspx
Products Page - abcd.com/xy123.aspx

Now I want to restructure new url in any one format out of the two.

1)
Homepage  - abcd.com  - same as it is.
Catergory Page URL - abcd.com/products/mobiles.aspx
Sub category Page - abcd.com/products/mobiles/samsung.aspx
Product Listing Page - abcd.com/products/mobiles/samsung/smartphones.aspx
Products Page - abcd.com/products/xy123.aspx

2)
Homepage  - abcd.com  - same as it is.
Catergory Page URL - abcd.com/category/mobiles.aspx
Sub category Page - abcd.com/category/mobiles/samsung.aspx
Product Listing Page - abcd.com/browse/mobiles/samsung/smartphones.aspx
Products Page - abcd.com/products/xy123.aspx

so my question is that, will there be any issue to google crawler ? will it be considered as spam by google algorithm ? can i use any one of the option without any fear of negative impact on my current google organic ranking ?

Thanks!
Mitesh

Hello Mitesh,

connect your website with 1. Google Search Console. Use .htaccess and redirect your old pages to new pages with 301 redirect. All bots and users will be redirect automaticaly to new page / categories. It is not easy, but it is best solution for redirects to new pages. If you use this solution, Google automaticaly get your rank of your old pages to new pages.

Be careful with this. Search Console show you problems on your website.

Thanks Tomas for prompt response.

But my query is not for 301 redirect but I want to confirm that -

In 1st query above - is it fine if I am using /Product in the URL structure ?

In 2nd query above - is it okay if I use "browse", "category" and "products" in the URL structure ?

Regards,
Mitesh

I think, that's ideal structure for your example is:

abcd.com/mobiles - summary of all mobile phones
abcd.com/mobiles/samsung - brand category
abcd.com/mobiles/apple - brand category
abcd.com/mobiles/samsung/galaxy-s7-edge - product page
abcd.com/mobiles/luxury - types category
abcd.com/mobiles/luxury/samsung - types brand category

Thanks againTomas!

So you do not want me to use words "browse", "category" and "products" in the URL structure ? Directly I can use brand name then product name or brand names, type of category and types of brand category right?

I asked this query because I have seen many of the top 3 position competitors of mine using Product, Category or browse word in url structure. So you do not recommend this to me?

Mitesh

I do not recommend to use URL such as above. Best is to ask yourself what will be on individual pages such as abcd.com/category/mobiles.aspx - will be there top products or best? And what do you expect on abcd.com/category/index.aspx - google often tries to check this page. Will be there all your categories? How many categories do you have? Google tries to ask as human.

Hello Expert,

Finally I decided following structure for my ecommerce website -

Category - abcd.com/taps.aspx
Sub Category - abcd.com/taps/basin-taps.aspx
Sub Sub Category - abcd.com/taps/basin-taps/mixer-taps.aspx
Product - abcd.com/mixer1234.aspx

Breadcrumb - Home - Taps - Basin Taps - Mixer Taps

Now I have query that my product abcd.com/mixer1234.aspx is displaying at main category, sub category, sub sub category then it is fine right?

I mean to say In main category there are 5 sub categories and below that I display few products of all 5 sub categories product. Same way When I go to sub category page it contains 4 sub sub categories below that I display few products of all sub sub categories. So it is fine to display in this way right? Because anywhere if product is clicked then customer will reach at this page only - abcd.com/mixer1234.aspx

Please let me know your views.

@Tomas - Please suggest.

Thanks
Mitesh
