I want to track number of clicks on mailto links on non-ecomm vs ecomm section

First of all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, sorry if it's not.

The scenario is like so:

I have a website, and it has an e-commerce section.

Example:

www.example.com is a blog

www.example.com/store is a store

Both on the (1) blog area, and on (2) each product page, there are contact details with email and tel number.

Rather than to know where specifically the visitor clicked the mailto link, I want to measure how often the email is clicked on (1) blog vs (2) store.

I found out on Google how to add GA or tag manager to mailto clicks, but I'm not sure how that would help. I think those would measure where the mailto is clicked, instead of a whole sum statistic that I want.

Is there a way, I can use one UA-XXXXXX-1, and add script after the page is rendered based on the section the page is in, to track/count the clicks?

EDIT: Reason for inserting script after page is rendered is because the blog is an old site, there are a lot of mailto that I might miss if I manually insert a script.

Hi,

This can be achieved by using GTM click events,

You can use the following settings to push data:

Event Category: Name of Page or push page URL

Event Action: Click

Event Label: Mail-to

your final report will show you:

Section / URL of page | No. of Clicks on mailto links | [other dimensions]

Now using segments in GA you can create Page 1 vs Page 2 report.

If you are using Google Tag Manager then the code should be right after <body> tag and it will fire on each trigger as per your setup.

hope that helps!

Thank you

There are a few ways to track mailto links in an email or on a web page. I wrote this article showing a few ways to track them. http://pidapi.com/how-to-track-mailto-links/
