Help with adding control/variation to A/B test with custom dimension

Hi, 

 

I'm just trying to get to grips with running a/b tests on GA (along with GTM) using a custom dimension to specify the experiment value. I currently have the A/B split working correctly and can access the custom dimension in GA which is recording the data correctly. However, I want to understand how to add a control and variation to this - and this control/variation terminology is mainly what's confusing me. How do I get from what I currently to have, to then have the experiment values as:

 

  • Control - "Experiment Name - Control"
  • Variation with messages - "Experiment Name - Some Message"

What I'm currently sending via a DataLayer is as below. Grateful for any pointers/explanation to help with the learning process!
