External link tracking with GA

Dear All,

I would like to track (via my GA dashboard) the usage of an external URL, used in a specific medium. (An example: The LinkedIn company URL mentioned in an email footer.) A possible solution could be, to create an "HTML redirect" on my website and share / track it, but I was wondering if there are other options as well?

Regards,

Jan

Hi Jan,

Yes, you need a redirect on your site, once you track the tagged link on your site the redirect takes the user to the external URL.

Hi Jan,

You can use the measurement protocol to send data to Google Analytics.

For tracking emails please see the document below:

Hope this helps.

Arnold thanks for the reply.

I am fairly new to this, but what I understand from the link you posted, is that I basically can "trigger" GA. Unfortunately I would still need some sort of forwarding.

What I can do now is:

  1. Create and upload an HTML file to my website containing:
    <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL= https://www.linkedin.com/groups/1604367">
  2. Use this link in my email:
    http://www.website-and-file-I-referred-to.html?utm_source=Footer&utm_medium=Email

Regards,

Jan
