Enhanced E-commerce for Non E-commerce Transactions

Hi all

 

I'm currently working on a project for an online portal where users:

 

  • Can book multiple freight shipping units in a single online transaction.
  • Can add a series of customisations for each unit i.e. temperature controls, hazardous materials etc

There is no price to pay online for each transaction as such it's not strictly 'E-commerce'

 

However I was exploring using the enhanced e-commerce set up to track user interactions such as:

 

  • Product Impression & Add to Cart = Unit created
  • Remove Product = Unit removed
  • Product Detail View = Unit expanded
  • Product Detail Update Unit has has additional information added
  • Product Purchase = User has clicked to book units

For each interaction I was exploring the idea of adding additional Custom Dimensions to capture the customisations the user adds to the unit not included in the standard e-commerce dimensions i.e.

I've not done this before as such does anyone foresee a problem with this?

Hi Kyle,

 

Probably too late, but using Ecommerce and custom dimensions is a smart way to do this and capture this data.  You could just continue to build out the product array for your options as well.  Either way should get what you want, it's really driven by how you want to use the data.

 

If you don't want to get granular on the merchandising and product and list impressions you could also do standard ecommerce or just ignore that piece of it.

I decided to move away from this idea in the short term with the website bing non transactional as I wasn't sure how the data would look in GA.

 

Taking a step back I've opted to use goals for the funnel and a data layer to capture additional page variables. 

 

It's an idea a may revisit in the future however for the time being I've kept it simple
