Cross Domain Goal Tracking Not Working

Hi. I'm trying to get cross domain goal tracking to work on this site. http://fresnochaffeezoo.org

Cross domain tracking is working. Goal conversions are working.

But all goals are saying the source is (direct) and not attributing goal conversions to Google AdWords. I know that some of the conversions must be from Adwords because we are running brand term ads. In particular, the Goal in question is for Ticket sales. And we are getting 50+ clicks to the site off our brand term "buy tickets" ads, so I know some of these are coming from Adwords. However GA says 100% direct traffic.

The URL we are tracking as a goal is third party cart confirmation page. https://webstore1.centaman.net/fresnochaffeezoo/CHECKOUT/tabid/67/ctl/PaymentReceipt/mid/404/Default...

We also have both domains, fresnochafeezoo.org and centaman.net, on the Referral Exclusion List.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Ryan,

In your case I would consider removing centaman.net from 'Referral Exclusion List' as a test. When you add any domain to that list then the traffic that lands there isn't actually removed, it's moved to 'Direct/None' basket. However in your case your conversion happens on centaman.net domain so there is a chance that it's being automatically labeled as 'Direct/None' because of that.

Hi Ryan,

Great to hear from you. Cross-domain tracking is a pretty advanced feature. I'll try to help. Smiley Happy

First of all, cross-domain tracking seems not to work properly. ClientId changes if a user moves from one domain to another. Basically, it means that the new session is created every time user moves from one domain to another.

If I was on the http://fresnochaffeezoo.org domain, my clientid was:

clientid1.png

If I moved to another domain, my clientid changed and it was:

clientid2.png

It's an indication that cross-domain tracking doesn't work properly. Check out this great tutorial: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1034342?hl=en

You can find step-by-step instructions there how to set this up properly.

To sum up, you should have this code on the fresnochaffeezoo.org website:

ga('create', ''UA-20732665-1'', 'auto', {'allowLinker': true});

ga('require', 'linker');

ga('linker:autoLink', ['centaman.net'] );

and this code on the centaman.net website:

ga('create', ''UA-20732665-1'', 'auto', {'allowLinker': true});

ga('require', 'linker');

ga('linker:autoLink', ['fresnochaffeezoo.org'] );

Hope this helps. Let me know if it's fixed I will debug it later on and will let you know does it work or not. Smiley Happy

Hi Ryan :-)

the tracking code snippet on http://fresnochaffeezoo.org is being added to the site via the Yoast GA WP plugin

The tracking code is not edited/configured to support cross domain tracking.

This is the related bit of code that is added via the plugin as per Google Tag Assistant

(can also be viewed by looking at the site source code)

I dont know if the tracking code on the cart confirmation page is configured for cross domain tracking either as I am

unable to access it.

I dont know if that plugin supports cross domain tracking and to the best of my knowledge it is no longer supported or

maintained by the original developer Yoast.

I have no affiliation with the following plugin, however I have used it in the past without any issues and to the best of my knowledge it does support cross domain tracking (help and support for 3rd party plugins should be sought via the plugin's developer or wordpress.org)

Thank you for your time and detailed feedback! I will try Olgierd N's recommendation first since it seems like the easiest one, then work my way down to the advanced suggestions as needed.

Hi Ryan,

I was wondering if you found a solution to the attribution not passing cross domain. I'm running into the exact same situation.

Thanks.
