Capturing unique variable using Google Analytics tags
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer on this.
I'm currently working for a loan company and implementing Google Analytics Goals to track our activity. There's roughly 8 Steps to the application that we will be tracking.
On Step 3 of the application (after the complete sign up) they are assigned a unique customer id by our database. I've used DoubleClick tracking in the past and know it is possible to capture that variable using those floodlights. Is it possible to do a similar thing with Google Analytics?
We are implementing analytics code and events through Google Tag Manager - will this impact how this variable is captured?
I've read a bit on how the data layer works, but I have very little coding experience so just wanted to check with you guys.

You can use custom dimensions to collect data that is not tracked automatically by GA:
