Can't track campains

On our website, wwww.weert.nl, Google Analytics is working well. But... I can't track any campaign data in Google Analytics. For example, I want to track this link:

http://www.weert.nl/Downloads/Gemeentewijzer/Gemeentewijzer%202017%20nr.%20876%20-%2008%20feb.pdf?ut...

http://www.weert.nl/Downloads/Gemeentewijzer/Gemeentewijzer%202017%20nr.%20876%20-%2008%20feb.pdf?utm_source=Nieuwsbrief&utm_medium=E-mail&utm_campaign=Gemeentewijzer

This does't work: Google Analytics doesn't show anything on the campaign-page.

We use this GA-tracking code:

<script type="text/javascript">
(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){
(i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o),
m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m)
})(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga');
ga('create', 'UA-28922642-1', 'auto');
ga('set', 'anonymizeIp', true);
ga('send', 'pageview');
</script>

What's going wrong here? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Arjan,

That’s not really possible since Google Analytics only works in a web document, and browsers handle PDF files (it's a PDF file you mentioned) directly via the browser interface. It means that browsers don’t execute JavaScript or build a web document if you send traffic to this PDF document. Thus, UTM campaign parameters won't work.

If there’s a link to the PDF, you're able to track it regardless of whether it opens the file for preview or lets you download it directly. I recommend reading this topic if you'd like to read more about that. Me and @Bronwyn V both described how to track clicks on different file download links.

Everything is fine with your Google Analytics code.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Taavi

Now, i've made a webpage, that's opening the pdf-file after 3 seconds. See: http://www.weert.nl/testlink. The link to the pdf is: http://www.weert.nl/Downloads/Gemeentewijzer/Gemeentewijzer%202017%20nr.%20876%20-%2008%20feb.pdf?ut...

But i can't track this one, although i've added the campain tags.  Any suggestions how to track this pdf-link in Google Analytics, instead of the direct link to the pdf-file in the e-mail newsletter?

@Arjan Kas I mentioned, Google Analytics only works in a web document. Browsers don’t execute JavaScript or build a web document if you send traffic to this PDF document.

You're automatically redirecting people to your PDF file from this page: http://www.weert.nl/testlink, so you if add UTM campaign parameters to this link, you're able to see how many people land on this page.

Take a look at this link:

http://www.weert.nl/testlink?utm_source=Nieuwsbrief&utm_campaign=Gemeentewijzer&utm_medium=E-mail

Let me know if it helps @Arjan K.
