Banner Ad Analytics Tracking for Advertisers

Hi!

I am trying to see how well a banner ad is performing on my company's site. The banner takes you straight to another company's site rather a unique URL, thus it is hard to measure click through rates and hits.

I tried using In-page analytics, but it does not show any clicks on the banner (it is a rotating banner & I am only looking for stats on one of the ads). The banner was not tagged as a campaign or an event prior to it's launch. Is there any way to get historical data for the add? Or is this something we will need to start now and track from here on? If so, how is that best done.

Thank you for the help!
Yuliya

Hi Yuliya,

I think there's no way to get this kind of historical data from Google Analytics if you haven't customized your implementation.

I would highly recommend using an outbound link tracking. Basically, you can use Google Analytics Events to track clicks on links that take users to a website other than your own.

Here's the guide if you use only Google Analytics (without the GTM): https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1136920?hl=en

If you use GTM as well, it would be way easier to track outbound link clicks:

1) Krista Seidan has written a great guide: http://www.kristaseiden.com/step-by-step-outbound-link-tracking-in-google-tag-manager/

2) Lunametrics has created an amazing recipe: http://www.lunametrics.com/labs/recipes/outbound-links/

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.
