how is Avg. Time on Page and Avg. Session Duration calculated?

I'm trying to create my own google analytics dashboard in excel, it's almost done, I just need this figured out. I need the metrics involved so I can create the formula in excel.

Hi JR,

Time on Page = (Time of last “engagement hit” on page) – (Time of first “engagement hit” from page)

Bounces and Exit Pages (if you haven't configured any interaction events on those pages etc) have 0 seconds Time on Page.

Avg. Time on Page = Time on Page / (Page Views - Exits)

Session duration - The time between the first and last engagement hit during the session. Bounces have 0 seconds session duration.

Here you can find even a longer explanation.

Hope this helps.

Does interaction hits (events with non-interaction=false) affect Avg Time on Page? From the longer explanation article it says that session duration is so, but still unclear for the Average Time on Page.

We have a very interactive page that doesn't send users to other pages, so we're trying to figure out what the metrics mean and what is better to use over time.

Hi Ray,

Non-interaction events do not affect Session Duration nor Avg. Time on Page.

Hope this helps @Ray T.
