google / referral as a source / medium?

Hi Everyone -- I have a client that asked me about this, and I am not 100% sure what to say. I know that Google image search and even some news articles can come through as google / referral as opposed to just organic in the source / medium report.

A breakdown of the referral path for this source has a high number of sessions coming from / (or just the homepage of Google), but back in 2014. Was Google Scholar or Google Reader accessible from the homepage back in 2014?

Referral paths include: /, /imgres, /url, // and /webhp

Hi @Ben B

Not all google traffic comes from organic search.

Not all referrals from Google.com domains come through organic search or AdWords ad listings. Referrals may come from a variety of sources, including Google Groups posts, or static pages on related Google sites. Such sessions are tagged as [referral] instead of [organic] or [cpc].
