ga client id number of users less that total number of users

Hi,

we implemented the solution when we collect ga client id to a custom dimension. We created a segment to show users with ga client id and the number of users is about 50 % less than the number of total users. do you have any thoughts on this?
Our first assumption was that users could browse in private mode or block cookies but the difference seems to be pretty high.
Any help appreciated.
Thank you,
Lukas

Hi @Lukas T could you share more on how you collect the data (pageview > event or on each hit)? What is the scope of CD and how do you query it (CD > Users)? Does the time range include only the time where client id is sent? High sampling with segment turned on?

Kind regards,

Hi @Zorin Escape, thanks for stepping in. We set collection in Tealium for GA tag. That means it is being collected on each hit. We set the scope of CD as "user".

In Google Analytics we created a segment for users having GA client id .The condition is set as following: ga client id (our created custom dimension) starts with "GA1." and that provides us only 50 % of total users. There is no sampling in place and we get data from 100 % of sessions. And data range is selected only for time range when ga client id was being collected.

Cheers,

Lukas

Hi @Lukas T let's exclude the simple case - implementation - does the initial hit (pageview) - send the client id? In some cases with GTM in specific if one uses a template tag this is not possible.

Issue 2 - is there any chance that the user id value gets overriden during the session?

Hi @Zorin Escape, thanks for your help. Actually, the initial hit send the client id and that id is kept during the entire sessions as well as having the same value next session when I land on the site (from the same browser and device). We did not find the case when it gets overriden.
It just strange there is 50 % difference in number for users with GA client id and total users number and we got a bit lost in figuring out why that happens.

Hi @Lukas T is there any way you can send the site URL in question?

Quick thought - check the hostname for the users with, and without clientID - maybe you are tracking parts of the site - or other domains where this is not being set.

Hi @John W, thanks for your comment. It seems like a good point but there is no other domain tracked for this specific GA property.

Hi @Lukas T - as I see it now this is a racing issue. So each time a person comes to the site for the first time the 1st hit cannot have the client Id set as it is still not accessible. Any subsequent hit in a session or any future session will have this client ID inside the dimension55 but all sessions from new users and with only 1 hit will not have client Id dimension assigned.

A solution would be to create a dummy GA code which fires prior to any other tracker on site so youll be sure the client Id and the _ga cookie is there - in GTM terms sequencing.
