When are my visitors getting 404 errors?

On my list of viewed pages, 404 appears as number 11.

How can I understand when my visitors are getting 404 errors? Can I make adjustments on my website to minimize the occurrence?

Is your website connected to Google webmaster tools? if not I would start there first. Learn more here: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6258314?utm_source=wnc_376106

The correct approach to minimizing depends on how your site is constructed.

First, make sure your "404" page is not indexed (you should see <meta name="robots" content=" noindex "> in the HTML). GA is reporting views of a page called "404" -- in most cases this actually is a custom webpage that is returned only when a 404 occurs, but I have seen these default pages indexed by mistake.

To evaluate the source of your 404s, a quick check could be to first select the page in analytics, then select "Full Referrer" as Secondary Dimension. You may see actual referral URLs or simple source and medium. The referral URLs you can then take corrective action.

An excellent tool to add to your analysis is Google Search Console (https://www.google.com/webmasters/), which includes a report of 404s Google finds when it spiders your site.
