Unusual user flow from direct source

When i go to view the "User Flow" chart for April it says that the vast majority is accessing from (direct) and that the primary landing page is the about page rather than root directory/home page. It's hasn't done this before, and in the previous months access through google to the home page has been the dominate trend.

Why is this happening suddenly?

PS: In the last month a pop-up window has appeared when visiting the home page for the first time with a call to action linking to an external site, in a new tab. Could this be the cause?

(the "/ommangholm/" is the about page)

Hey Bertram,

Unless your pop up is linking to your about us page it makes no sense that it would be the cause. So either:

(a) Traffic from Google is directing results to your About Us Page, or

(b) The report you're looking at, for some reason is using sampling and this sampling is looking more at about us traffic for some reason.

I would suggest you try an understand the the type of Queries in your Search Console Report as well as looking at landing page traffic destinations from Google / Organic. This may explain if you're about us page is ranking and delivering a large amount of traffic.
